Cask ale or cask-conditioned beer is the term for unfiltered and unpasteurised beer which is conditioned (including secondary fermentation) and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure. Cask ale may also be referred to as real ale, a term coined by the Campaign for Real Ale, often now extended to cover bottle-conditioned beer as well. The Monro has a range of real ales from as far North as Cumbria to the South of England in Sussex. They require care and attention (due to the secondary fermentation) but you will benefit in full from their exceptional taste and flavour. What's more you can try any of our Cask Ales for free - ask to taste any from any member of staff. NOTE: Not all Ales are served at the same time - please call to check which beers are available |

As you know we have a dedicated Cellarman who looks exclusively after the foibles and charms of our Real Ales. |We have four pumps and there will be four real ales on to choose from 90% of the time. If we are line cleaning or a Real Ale requires longer to settle then obviously some pumpos will be bare as we wait for the Real Ale to reach its optimum condition for sale. Not all the beers listed here will be on at the same time so if you are travelling any distance or are visiting us mainly for the Real Ales please call 0151 707 9933 to find out what's available. |

In addition to our Guest Ales we have an excellent choice of high quality Ales that we regularly stock due to their huge popularity. Each one of them has been personally selected and tasted (!) by ourselves and offer the customer a variety of different tastes, flavours, aromas and colour.
Jennings Cocker Hoop An award-winning light golden bitter from an all malt brew, with Styrian Golding hops added at various stages, to give a distinctive hop flavour and aroma. A beer of great character, appealing to those drinkers who really appreciate their beer and are looking for quality. Launched in 1995 as 'September Ale', Jennings Cocker Hoop has become hugely popular throughout the country. What's in a name? The name is derived from 'Cock-a-Hoop', an old custom of removing the cock (or spigot) from a barrel and resting it on the hoop of the cask before commencing a drinking bout, but it was changed to reflect the brewery's location on the banks of the River Cocker. Tasting notes Cocker Hoop is one of the original golden ales, light in colour with a citrus finish. At 4.6% ABV Cocker Hoop is extremely drinkable
Jennings Sneck Lifter A dark beer with a reddish tinge, derived from the use of coloured malts, perfectly balanced with specially-formulated brewing sugars and English aromatic hops. A strong satisfying ale, wonderfully warming and full of complex flavours which create an intriguing beer of great character. First introduced in 1990 as a winter warmer, and has become a firm favourite in the portfolio. Award-winning beer, recently receiving a bronze at the Brewry Industry International Awards held in Munich. What's in a name? In northern dialect 'sneck' means door latch, and the 'sneck lifter' was a man's last sixpence which enabled him to lift the latch of a pub door and buy himself a pint, hoping to meet friends there who might treat him to one or two more. Tasting notes A very individual style of beer - that has a fullness of flavour created by the chocolate and amber malt. A rich full-bodied ale with a good mouth feel. Easy to drink, but beware at 5.1% ABV. |

Marston's Pedigree Marston's Pedigree has always been crafted using the finest natural ingredients to ensure you receive a truly exceptional beer. We only use natural Burton spring water and traditional varieties of barley and hops (Maris Otter barley, Fuggles and Goldings hops), rather than less expensive, commercially grown modern hybrids. Unique in the world, it is still brewed in the oak casks of the Burton Unions to preserve its unique character, consistent quality and taste. Many brewers have abandoned this traditional method of brewing over the years due to its extra cost and labour intensive maintenance, which requires a skilled cooper to constantly service the wooden casks. It has been the commitment and belief of each Marston's Head Brewer to preserve the extra effort that goes into each brew that makes Marston's Pedigree such an exceptional beer.
Ringwood Best Bitter Tempting hop aroma with fruit notes. Good malt feel in the mouth, dry, tangy and fruit finish. Delicious, easy drinking slightly tart pale bitter. Ringwood Best Bitter is an exceptional ale with an abv of 3.8%. |
